The Making of the Courtyard Starts

They have started breaking up the cement for the courtyard. This picture was taken through the window. I wanted to make sure my toes didn't get in the way.

It ain't much, if it ain't Dutch!

Okay, the price of gas is sky-high but with your exact same dollar bills you would be paying (conversion June 2008).

$ 4.00 (gone up again since article published) for a gallon in U.S.
$ 4.72 in Japan
$ 4.79 in South Africa
$ 5.09 in Canada
$ 8.71 in U.K.
$ 8.78 in France
$ 8.98 in Germany
and a whopping $ 10.05 in Netherlands.

Forget about renting a car to go see the tulips in the Keukenhof this year.

Information from New York Times June 29, 2008.

Living in the Sizzling Inferno.

I just read in Real Simple Magazine that the hottest places in the world and their average temperatures are:

Death Valley, California 134 degrees, 56.6 Celsius
Kebili, Tunesia 131 degrees, 55 Celsius
Tombouctou, Mali 130.1 degrees 54.5 Celsius
Tirat Tavi, Israel 129 degrees 53.8 Celsius
Ahwaz, Iran 128.3 degrees 53.5 Celsius

It makes 117 degrees (47.2) seem a little on the cool side.
